Frequently asked questions

1. What does an Au Pair do in the Netherlands?

As an Au Pair, you’ll live with a Dutch host family and help with light household tasks and childcare (up to 30 hours per week, with at least 2 days off). In return, you receive free board and lodging plus a modest allowance. The main purpose is cultural exchange: learning about Dutch culture while sharing your own.

2. Who is eligible to become an Au Pair in the Netherlands?

You must be between 18 and 25 years old, unmarried, without children (including foster children), and coming to the Netherlands for the first time under an Au Pair program. You also need to speak English and meet the general requirements set by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), including obtaining a residence permit via a recognized Au Pair agency.

3. Is Klaver Au Pair’s service free for Filipino candidates?

Yes. At Klaver Au Pair, our service is free for Filipino applicants. We do receive a commission from the recognized Au Pair agencies once a candidate is successfully placed with a host family, but there are no fees charged to the Au Pair themselves.

4. Do I need to pay any agency or preparation fees?

By Dutch regulations, Au Pairs should not pay any agency fees beyond a minimal cost (up to €34) related to application preparations (e.g., minor registration fees). If you are being asked to pay more than that, it may not align with the official guidelines.

5. What is the application process through Klaver Au Pair?

  1. Initial Inquiry: You contact us and provide your details.
  2. Screening & Qualification: We verify if you meet the age, marital status, and other IND requirements.
  3. Agency Connection: We introduce you to recognized Au Pair agencies in the Netherlands who handle the formal visa or permit process.
  4. Host Family Matching: The agency connects you to potential host families.
  5. Visa & Travel: After you’re matched, they guide you through your residence permit (MVV/TEV) and travel preparations.

6. How long does the Au Pair program in the Netherlands last?

Typically, the Au Pair stay can last up to 12 months. You’ll receive a residence permit for the duration of your exchange period, which is arranged through the recognized Au Pair agency.

7. Will I need to know Dutch before arriving?

Fluency in Dutch is not required. Most agencies require Au Pairs to speak English at a conversational level. Learning basic Dutch can be helpful for day-to-day tasks, but it is not a strict prerequisite.

8. What documents or proof do I need to provide as a Filipino applicant?

You may be asked to provide proof of identity, proof that you are unmarried and without children, and any required personal documents for visa processing. Your recognized Au Pair agency will give you a detailed list of required paperwork once they begin your application.

9. What are the host family’s responsibilities?

The host family must offer you:

  • A private room and free board (meals and lodging).
  • A modest weekly or monthly allowance.
  • Assistance in exploring cultural opportunities in the Netherlands. They also must register you at their address in the Dutch Personal Records Database (BRP).
